Braces Gave Me New Life

It all started on 7th Mar 2012, when I took a mold of my teeth. It was because of much ignorance otherwise it would have been done years ago. I had this pair of vampire teeth for over 10 years, many friends comforted me that they look cute but dude – would you want that with you? Japanese fancies that, yea right. Sick of my signature smirk on past photos? These were why because I never thought of them as cute.

Few months after I started working, finally braced myself to the dentist and entered the journey of orthodontics. 4 teeth to be extracted. I had prolonged bleeding for my first extraction and ended up in hospital emergency room for 1 night. What a night! 1 week later after my second extraction, braces and wire were then attached to my teeth. Oh my, I had to live with them for years!

Straits Dental was the only temple that I religiously visited every month for continuously almost 3 years, every time my kind dentist assured me that it was getting better. And more molar bands, extra hooks, thicker wires. My mouth was full of metals! Would the lightning strike on me?

The process was not easy. With these extra metals I couldn’t speak clearly – how many times someone asked me to repeat again what I just said? No more blowing whistle. I ate anyway whatever I shouldn’t be eating, hence 5 times a day brushing my teeth (and I still had to floss?!). Almost all Listerine flavors tried. Ulcers sometimes. Then someone said “sorry can you please repeat again?”, sure. And remember not to show teeth for close up photos, especially when flash light is on!

Dude! NO selfie with braces!

Fast forward to 31.5mths later, after querying my dentist for the umpteenth time, finally my braces were taken off! New life is here – no more hesitating to give a wide smile or wear lipsticks. No more cutting apples and digging crab legs with chopstick. I can bite hard food again! I can whistle again! My confidence level is higher than ever. I am overjoyed!

Life without braces :)

Life without braces 🙂

Two reasons I am sharing my personal experience here. For those who do not need to wear braces, you are lucky. Please be more tolerating and compassionate for people with braces (or ugly teeth), do you know how painful it is to give you a broken smile?

For those who are considering of getting braces, or plastic surgery, or any kind of things that you fear to try – for God’s sake please go for it! What are you waiting for?

WisdomTooth

I did my wisdom tooth surgery + removal right after removing braces. The naughty one on bottom right is now gone! Against strong medical advice, I didn’t take any antibiotics nor painkillers, even that might be the reason of the most swelling face my dentist has seen. I decided not to eat and drink after the surgery as long as I can. My first banana milkshake after 26hr of starving was divine! It really wasn’t a very easy week: no coffee, no workout, liquid-food only, constant bleeding while talking, feeling tired and always on the verge of fainting. Thanks god finally this is over and I survived!

p/s: I will miss the monthly visits to my charming dentist (who always hummed some songs when adjusting braces) and all the nice and friendly staff there. Thank you!
